Manners Matter: Etiquette Builds Confident Middle Schoolers

JUNIOR COTILLION

Junior Cotillion of Fredericksburg is one of Fredericksburg Area Service League's oldest and most-loved programs, offering middle-school aged children instruction in basic etiquette and ballroom dance. Our purpose is to teach children how to treat others with dignity, grace, and respect for better relationships with family, friends and associates.

Classes start September 19, 2010 at the

Strictly Ballroom Dance Studio, 125 Olde Greenwich Drive, Suite 190, off of Lafayette Boulevard in Fredericksburg.

Junior Cotillion classes provide lessons in everyday and formal manners and popular ballroom dance in six 90-minutes classes and two party dances for a total of eight sessions.

The HOLLY BALL, a semi-formal dance, allows students to share their Cotillion experience with a parent (or other relative or family friend) "date".

The FORMAL DINNER DANCE, marking the end of the Junior Cotillion season, is a student-only event that allows students to practice the social graces and dance skills they have acquired. The Fredericksburg Country Club provides a formal setting, including a four-course dinner followed by a dance-card style dance.

The class dates for this year are: September 19, October 3 and 17, November 7, December 5 ~ Holly Ball, January 9 and 23, 2011 and February 13 ~ Formal Dinner Dance.

Melissa and Michael Scott, our dance instructors, have 16 years experience instructing ballroom dance. Since opening Strictly Ballroom Dance Studio in 2002, they have earned numerous top studio and teaching awards from major dance organizations. Four-time National Professional Open "American Smooth" finalists, the Scotts are members of the National Dance Council of America. Mr. Scott is certified through the Imperial Society for Teachers of Dance in London, England. In 2004, Mr. Scott was cotillion dance instructor for Georgetown Visitation Preparatory School. He has judged both the Senior Olympic Dance Competition and most recently, this year's "Dancing with the Stars" preliminary held in Richmond.

Judith Murray, our etiquette instructor, graduated from Denison University with a B.A. in English. Following a career in marketing, sales, and management, she graduated from the Protocol School of Washington. She has taught corporate etiquette, dining skills, and international protocol to both corporate classes and college students. She continues to teach at several colleges, spending several weeks a year in residence at business schools. She also teaches locally at Germanna Community College. Mrs. Murray looks forward to helping Junior Cotillion students prepare for a lifetime of social interactions and the knowledge of polite and established rules in conversation, dining, meeting others and life in a global environment.
